Common Terms

These are some common terms you may hear when you come into our office for a visit.

Astigmatism: The eyeball is shaped like a football causing it to have two focal points.

Cataract:  The natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy and hardens which causes vision to become impaired.  Unless surgery is performed, glasses will no longer help vision to be clear.

Glaucoma:  Pressure of the fluid inside the eye builds up which can cause vision loss if not treated.

Hyperopia:  Farsighted, able to see things better at a distance than upclose.

Myopia:  Nearsighted, able to see things better upclose than far away.

Photophobia:  Light sensitivity, both indoor and outdoors.

Presbyopia:  Usually affects everyone after the age of 40 when the eye loses the ability to accommodate for close-up reading.  Can be corrected by wearing bifocals.

Strabismus:  When the muslces controlling movement of the eye are not working correctly causing one or both eyes to be out of correct alignment when at rest.

Lens Materials

Glass:  Twice as heavy as plastic.  Not recommended because it is easy to shatter.

Plastic:  Standard lens material, scratch protection and UV protection must be added if desired.

Polycarbonate:  A material that is thinner, lighter weight, and more impact resistant than plastic. Has scratch and UV protection already built into the lens.

High Index:  Made from plastic material, used with higher prescriptions because it is thinner.  The higher the index the thinner the lens.

Lens Styles

Single Vision:  A lens that has one prescription for either distance or near vision.

Bifocal:  A lens that has two prescriptions, one for distance and one for near vision.

Trifocal:  A lens that has three prescriptions, one for distance, intermediate, and near vision.

Progressive Lens(No Line Bifocal):  The design of the lens is so that the prescription slowly changes from the distance prescription to the near prescription as the focus is moved down the lens with very little head movement.  Unlike the traditional bifocal lens, a progressive lens has no visiable lines.

Lens Options

Scratch Protection:  Helps to minimize scratches.

UV Protection:  Protects eyes from damage caused by the suns harmful UV rays.

Tint:  Colors the lens, available in different colors or shades.

Transitions:  A technology built into the lens that changes from clear to dark when exposed to the suns rays.  Does not change inside the car.

AntiReflective:  Eleminates glare from computer screens and night driving
